San Diego is known for expansive clay soils that swell and shrink with the seasons. This ground movement causes rigid poured concrete to crack over time. Interlocking pavers are designed as a “flexible pavement system” – they float on a compacted aggregate base, allowing them to move slightly with the earth without cracking. If a paver ever settles or stains, it can be individually lifted and re-set or replaced – something you cannot do with cracked concrete.
Weeds don’t grow from beneath the pavers; they grow in the sand joints from wind-blown seeds. At Charmet Tile, we use premium polymeric sand—a high-tech joint stabilizer that hardens like grout when watered but remains flexible. This creates a seal that locks out weeds and ants while preventing the sand from washing away during rain.
We often install porcelain pavers or thin pavers over existing concrete patios (called an “overlay”). However, the existing concrete must be in relatively good condition and have proper drainage pitch. We assess your site to ensure the new height won’t block doors or vents. This is a cost-effective way to modernize a pool deck or patio without the mess of full demolition.
A properly installed paver driveway is a lifetime investment. While asphalt needs resealing every few years and concrete eventually cracks, pavers are manufactured to withstand 8,000+ PSI (4x stronger than concrete). Because they are modular, they don’t suffer from thermal expansion cracks. Our craftsman installation ensures the base is compacted to industry standards, preventing the “rutting” seen in cheaper jobs.
We specifically recommend textured, slip-resistant porcelain pavers for San Diego pool decks. Unlike dark natural stone that absorbs heat, light-colored porcelain reflects the sun, staying significantly cooler underfoot. They are also impervious to pool chemicals, salt water, and mold, making them the safest and most low-maintenance option for families.
